Martin Luther King Jr. Word Search Puzzle
Martin Luther King Jr. is such an inspirational figure in our history. I always loved teaching my second graders about his life and achievements. In addition to reading stories about MLK, I found that word search puzzles offered a great way to introduce new vocabulary to my students.
You’ll notice that the word searches below are geared for different grade levels as they each use terms appropriate for various age groups. All of my Martin Luther King Jr. word searches are free to download and print. You can discuss the pronunciations and meanings of each word with your students before or after they complete the worksheet.
Life of Martin Luther King Jr.
If you don’t have easy access to books about Martin Luther King Jr., you can read this brief overview of his life to your students.
Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia to Michael and Alberta King. After attending Morehouse College, a historically black school, Martin Luther King Jr. became a minister, earned his Ph.D., and married Coretta Scott.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. preached at Ebenezer Baptist Church with his father and was active in the Civil Rights Movement in the South. He is known for being a nonviolent proponent of equal rights in America and was even awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Additionally, Martin Luther King Jr. is famous for his incredible “I have a Dream” speech in Washington D.C.
Sadly, Dr. King was assassinated in Memphis, TN in 1968, but the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. lives on today. In the United States, we celebrate Martin Luther King Day on the third Monday in January each year. MLK Day is a federal holiday in honor of King’s birthday, yet we continue to pay tribute to Dr. King far beyond this long weekend in January.

I separated my MLK word search puzzles by difficulty level and age group. Each word search also comes with an answer key for convenience. If you are using them in the classroom, they make great morning work sheets or extension activities.
