November Writing Prompts for Kids

November is such a cozy month, filled with seasonal activities and holidays. It’s the perfect time to capture all that excitement in a daily journal! I’ve been using the writing prompts below with my first grader while homeschooling, but they’re also fantastic story starters for older kids.
Whether you’re teaching in a traditional classroom or at home, your kids will have a blast with these creative writing options! They can work on their writing during morning work time, ELA lessons, or even while transitioning between activities. Some teachers even assign these journal prompts for homework—it’s all about what works best for you!
25 Journal Prompts for November
Since my younger daughter is still learning to read higher-level words, I choose and assign the journal prompt for her each day. If you’re teaching older kids, consider giving them a copy of the writing menu so they can choose their own prompt for the day. They can cross off each one after using it, which makes it easy to pick something new next time.

I’ve created three printable PDF versions of the November writing prompts, all featuring the same story starters but with different layouts. These are completely free for you to print and use with your students. These are the writing prompts included on the printables:
- Describe what a perfect day in November would look like. What would you do?
- What would you do if you were president for a day? Write about your plans!
- If you were a president, what pet would you want? Describe your pet and its name.
